This last winter was pretty rough. Lots of big storms battered the Oregon coast and several old forgotten shipwrecks were uncovered on the beaches of southern Oregon. There was even one that nobody knew was there! We had heard about some of these and decided to try and find one of them. It was a wreck of an old wooden boat that had been buried in the sand for a long time. So long that there was no record anywhere of what the name of the ship had been! It was quite the mystery. The wreck was near Bandon, Oregon about 5 hours drive from our house, close to Whiskey Creek near Whiskey Run Drive. That was all the information we had to go on. We left at 4:00am (4:00am is the OFFICIAL Sopers Adventuring hour) and headed south. At about 9:00am we drove into Bandon and started searching. The GPS was no help since it didn't even list a Whiskey Run Drive. We drove around and found a restaurant called Whiskey Run and figured we must be close. Well we drove around for a while and even asked a few locals (my dad hates to ask!) and still we couldn't find it. We decided that maybe it was further south so we headed down Hwy 101 for several miles. No luck. Hmmm... Maybe the newspaper didn't want a bunch of people swarming all over the wreck, and might have printed some misleading information? That is a possibility. We may never know. We didn't find the wreck and by now the sand has probably covered it back up, waiting for another huge storm to uncover it again 50 years from now. Now you may be thinking at this point that the adventure is a bust and we wasted our time, but you would be wrong to think that. All adventures have unexpected thing happen and they always turn out to be great fun. This adventure was no exception. While we didn't ever find the wreck, we did stumble on the coolest beach ever! We were driving along a small street on some cliffs above the beach and decided to stop for a few minutes. We turned into a very small state park that didn't seem like anything more than a small parking lot. We got out to stretch our legs and we discovered that there were stairs leading down to the beach below. And what a beach it was! There were cliffs of course and a small stream and big rocks out in the water and best of all a cave and a tunnel!!! If the tide were lower there would have been some really cool tide pools as well. We spent several hours exploring the beach and the cave and the tunnel. It was so cool that we even forgot all about our disappointment about not finding the ship wreck! |
